Hi everyone, I’m working on a low-power camera application using the EOS S3, and I’m trying to optimize power consumption during intermittent image capture (e.g., capturing 1 frame every few seconds). Currently, I see higher-than-expected power draw even when the system is mostly idle between captures.
Has anyone here successfully minimized power usage in a similar use case? Specifically:
Which sleep mode works best between captures?
Are there recommended ways to fully gate the camera interface or MIPI block when not in use?
Any tips for reducing wake-up latency without increasing overall power consumption?
Appreciate any insights or examples from real projects!
EOS S3 Camera Power Optimization
What sleep mode are you currently using between captures?

I ran into the same issue on EOS S3, and the key insight for me was that “idle” isn’t really low power unless you explicitly shut things down.
This is a great question! Optimizing power for intermittent capture on the EOS S3 can be tricky. For sleep modes, have you looked into deep sleep with an RTC wake-up?

I faced something similar on a battery-powered wildlife camera. The biggest improvement came from using the deepest sleep mode that preserved only the RTC and wake-up source, then powering down the MIPI and sensor rails between captures. I also measured each state transition rather than relying on datasheet estimates, since regulators and pull-ups added noticeable leakage. Before optimizing, I used the Cps Test platform to check timing consistency across repeated cycles; it helped separate firmware delays from hardware wake-up time. A short wake-up benchmark is definitely worth doing.

This is an excellent question! Optimizing power for intermittent capture on the EOS S3 can be challenging. Have you considered deep sleep with RTC wake-up?
