I'm having exactly the same issue, and I tried lsusb command in ubuntu 20.04 running on VM. Got below msg.
jzhang@ubuntu:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0e0f:0008 VMware, Inc. VMware Virtual USB Mouse
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0e0f:0002 VMware, Inc. Virtual USB Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0e0f:0003 VMware, Inc. Virtual Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
The USB port doesn't come to VM.
Running preloaded program from flash on Ubuntu 20.04 via VirtualBox
I am using WIN10 running vmware.
In Windows, i can see VMware USB device has been recognized by Windows.
But cannot detect by Ubuntu in VM.
I also tried ubuntu20.04 in virtualbox. USB extention pack has been installed and it can recognized Merced board as well.
Still cannot make it work for QuickFeather.
I am wondering do I need to install driver for Win10 first?
Although in Windows, I already can use Putty to control the board.

So far, on Win10 with VirtualBox or VMware, there is no solution for the QF, yet. Other people has reported success with running Ubuntu 18.04 WSL.

The QuickFeather recovery procedure is tested with Win10 + Jlink and Native Ubuntu 18.04 + Jlink.
This is also very helpful to me. Thank you guys.
